About Dr. Hunter

Joel D. Hunter MD grew up in Orlando, Florida. After graduating from high school with a 4.0 GPA in three years, he attended Taylor University in Indiana, where graduated with honors in two and a half years. He says he just mostly was in a hurry to get out of the cold. Dr. Hunter attended medical school at the University of South Florida College of Medicine. He received the highest grade possible in every didactic course in medical school. Upon his graduation, he was given the award for Academic Excellence.

During residency at University of South Florida, Dr. Hunter began to see for the first time the results possible when a passion, gifting, and opportunity finally align. It was there that he first started performing cataract surgery and it was soon after that his scheduled patient list started growing as the veterans at the VA Hospital in Tampa started talking and those waiting for surgery decided to wait and time their cataract surgery for when Dr. Hunter would be at the hospital. He decided to focus his energy in that specific discipline of refractive surgery.

At the time, the best fellowship in the U.S. for refractive surgery was a place in Kansas called Durrie Vision. Dan Durrie, MD is a pioneer in refractive surgery and has been personally involved in the development of almost every new technology since the birth of the field in 1988. Durrie Vision chose one doctor each year for an intensive one-on-one fellowship. After a two-day interview process, Dr. Durrie discontinued all further interviews with other applicants and gave him the position. That decision was one of the most pivotal moments that made Hunter Vision possible. While at this one-year fellowship in Kansas City, Dr. Hunter was immersed in and trained on the most advanced equipment, by the leader in the field of refractive surgery.

Dr. Hunter returned to Orlando and started Hunter Vision in 2010 with the goal of performing the best refractive surgery possible in a way that would make people the happiest possible.
